CURRICULUM INFORMATION

The following is a partial list of curriculum and programming offered to students at Concord Community Schools. Parents or guardians who wish to learn more about these offerings are invited to contact their child's principal or the Concord Education Department by calling 574-875-5161.

Canvas (Learning Management System) 

Canvas is the platform that teachers at Concord use to deliver lessons to students, as well as to communicate with parents and guardians about a child’s skill development and learning achievement.

Curriculum and Instruction

Concord Community Schools offers curriculum that develops students' literacy and math skills at all levels. Teachers provide instruction using industry standard best practices, following curriculum that is derived from Indiana State Standards.

Curriculum Resources

  • Fundations - Used in grades Kindergarten through second to teach early literacy skills include phonics and phonemic awareness and is based on the latest advances in the science of reading.

  • Everyday Math - Used in grades Kindergarten through six to teach math. Everyday math is a core curriculum developed out of the University of Chicago that uses the latest advances in brain research to structure curriculum across the year and grades.

  • In grades three through six there is not an adopted curriculum for reading instruction. Teachers follow curriculum maps that outline state standards to be focused on every two weeks and progress is measured by common assessments given to all students every four to five weeks.

  • The junior high and high school offer a multitude of curriculum resources depending on the specific course. To learn more about your child’s curriculum in grades seven through twelve, please reach out to your child’s school principal.

Dyslexia

Definition: “Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”  -https://dyslexiaida.org/definition-of-dyslexia/

In accordance with SEA 217, Indiana’s dyslexia law, Concord screens all Kindergarten through second grade students once per year for risk factors for dyslexia. Concord students are screened using DIBELs. Students who are found to be at risk for Dyslexia receive additional instruction and intervention and parents receive information regarding their reading ability and the interventions being provided.

Child Abuse Prevention

In accordance with IC 20-30-5-5.7, students are to be instructed on child abuse and child sexual abuse. Instruction on child abuse and child sexual abuse will be delivered by the school counselor or school social worker who has training and expertise in this area. Parents are welcome to review the content used to instruct students in this area and are asked to contact their child's principal to make this request. 

Developing Well-Rounded Learners

Concord Community Schools offers strong programming at every grade level to help students become well-rounded individuals. This is taught through the development of leadership skills, positive relationships, self-awareness, and by supporting students’ emotional needs. 

Leader in Me 

Offered at Concord Junior High School, Concord Intermediate School, Concord East Side Elementary, and Concord Ox Bow Elementary 

Leader in Me addresses common challenges that are unique to students during their formative years. Parents, educators, and school administrators are concerned with their child’s physical, mental, social, and economic well-being, all of which are factors that can contribute to or hinder academic success.

Capturing Kids’ Hearts aims to help schools cultivate relational capacity, improve school culture, strengthen trust between teachers and students, create accountability and improve academic performance.

Character Strong

Offered at Concord High School

Character Strong programming helps students develop competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, social awareness, and responsible decision making. Additionally, students are encouraged to develop character through patience, kindness, honesty, respect, selflessness, forgiveness, commitment, and humility.

PATHS Program 

Offered at Concord West Side Elementary 

The PATHS Program helps students acquire skills such as increasing self-control, helping and sharing with others, and developing a sense of connectedness to their community. Teachers report students who learn from the PATHS program are more focused in the classroom and have increased academic achievement.
